Elder Abuse Awareness (Aired on May 27 and 28, 2017)

The sixth annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, celebrated on June 16, 2017, is discussed on RadioRotary by Susan Davidson of Friends of Seniors and Dana Pavlock of Evercare. Elder abuse can be psychological, financial, sexual, physical, or simply neglectful. It is more of an issue today than in the past because people are living longer, but families no longer have several generations living in the same location. Isolated elders, many suffering from mild to serious dementia, can be easy prey for caregivers of various kinds. Friends of Seniors does not deal directly with elder abuse, but provides medical transportation, grocery shopping, caregiver respite, and similar services through trustworthy volunteers. Evercare is a certified home health care agency that also offers a managed long-term care plan through Medicaid as well as an adult social day program. Together, the two organizations are behind the 2017 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day celebration in Poughkeepsie, a half-day conference on recognition and relief.

Victim Safety/Domestic Abuse (Aired on May 20 and May 21 2017)

A Center for Victim Safety and Support (Aired on May 20 and 21, 2017)

Leah Feldman , Director of the Center for Victim Safety and Support at Family Services in Dutchess County, and volunteer Kathleen Paluso discuss the various ways the Center aids victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and other crimes. Two hot lines connect directly to assistance: (845)485-5550 for domestic violence and (845)452-7272 for victims of rape or other crimes. The Center can help a victim find shelter from an abuser or work with the courts in providing protection. Licensed counselors are available around the
clock. Much of the RadioRotary program is concerned with the causes
of domestic violence and ways that victims can cope.

RadioRotary interviews Kingston-Sunrise Rotary President Alicia Marcinkowski about the club’s fundraiser known as “The Mutt Strut.” This is a chance for owners of all breeds (or nonbreeds) of dogs to bring their pets to the Kingston Point Dog Park, where prizes are awarded in many categories: e.g. best-behaved dog, best-looking, look-alikes, and more. The event is partnered with SUNY Ulster’s Veterinary-Technical (“Vet-Tech”) club and the nearby Smorgasburg is available for the humans who want to eat during the event.
There are numerous booths from vendors of pet-related materials. The event includes demonstrations of dog-related materials and speakers on dog-related topics. It concludes with the dog parade. Money raised at the event, which is free to participants but not to vendors, will help support two international projects (books for Kenya and toys for Ethiopia and Bosnia) as well as many local
organizations.

Red Hook’s 2017 Apple Blossom Day (Aired on May 6 and 7, 2017)

Once again RadioRotary visits Red Hook Rotary’s club meeting to learn about Apple Blossom Day and other activities of the Red Hook Club. Rotarian Dave
Wright is in charge of the 2017 Apple Blossom Day, the street festival that traditionally kicks off the spring-summer season of activity, as it has done for more than 30 years (the last 17 operated by Red Hook Rotary). In addition to several dance and music performances on the stage erected for this event, there are about a hundred craft vendors, very many food vendors, and—for the children—pony rides, a bouncy house, face painting, and a petting zoo. Rotarian Susan Simon is in charge of the hot-dog grill. The Rotary club does much more
then the annual Apple Blossom Day. Rotarian Linda Greenblatt speaks about the Red Hook Business Directory and about the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA). Rotarian Christine Chale describes Red Hook’s participation in
international Youth Exchange.
