Peekskill Rotarian Lt. Colonel Carole Voisey tells Jonah Triebwasser and Kathy Kruger the story of the Salvation Army, its activities, and her involvement with it, starting with 6 generations in the Church on her father’s side and five on her mother’s. In Peekskill, the Salvation Army runs a soup kitchen, a food pantry, and a children’s after-school homework help program, while different arm of the Salvation Army runs the thrift store selling donated goods whose sales fund residential centers for rehabilitating alcoholics and addicts. Together, the branches of the Salvation Army fulfill a slogan of General William Booth, who founded the Church in 1895: “Soup, Soap, and Salvation. Lt. Colonel Voisey also tells her fascinating personal
story, starting as a Cadet and helping train officers in the Salvation Army in Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe, and outlines plans for a “battle of the bells,” which will pit individuals and service organization in raising money at holiday time.
