The Anderson Center for Autism (Aired on May 18 and 19, 2019)

The Anderson Center for Autism returns as a topic for RadioRotary, this time with guests
Chrissy Wolcott and Lisa Susczynski telling about some of the programs and techniques used at the Center to improve the lives of children and adults who are on the autism spectrum. Autism is a complex syndrome that required a medical diagnosis to identify. The spectrum ranges from persons with slight problems functioning in society through to those who cannot speak or have other serious mental impairment. The Anderson Center has educational facilities from young persons from age 5 to 21, both residential and day programs. Also it supports group homes throughout Dutchess County. Among the topics covered in the RadioRotary interviews are ways to make stores and other public places friendlier to those with autism. In part because the Center serves individuals who have little money, there are fundraisers, including a golf tournament, and volunteers are always needed to help with these events. There is a lot more in the program, so listen and learn about this important topic and about our local Center that is known for its innovative programs.

Great Events from Goshen Rotary (Aired on May 11 and 12, 2019)

Rotary 7210 Past District Governors Ken and Doris Obremski, both members of
the Rotary Club of Goshen NY (Ken is currently club president) visit RadioRotary

A Festival and More from Red Hook Rotary (Aired on May 4 and 5, 2019)

RadioRotary takes its microphone to a meeting of Red Hook Rotary for breakfast
at Cancun’s. Rotarian Dave Wright describes this year’s Apple Blossom Festival,
a village-wide celebration of spring with many food and craft vendors as well as
live entertainment and special treats for children. In addition to commercial
activity, organizations such as the high school, library, and town board have
information booths. Local banks are financial sponsors, so entrance and parking
are both free. In another interview, Rotarian Christine Chale describes the
several Rotary-sponsored international youth exchange programs, ranging from
a short-term summer exchange in which the same two high-school students from
here and from abroad trade for each others houses sequentially to the long-term
full school year exchange in which an older student lives with two or three
different families. Red Hook also participates in a program called “CLYNK;”
bottles and plastic are recycled through a local Hannaford’s supermarket in
special bags and money collected is used for a good purpose—in Red Hook,
providing hygiene products to be distributed to needy families at the local food
pantry. Some other Red Hook Rotary projects are also noted.

Narcan Training in Dutchess Country (Aired on April 27 and 28, 2019)

RadioRotary hosts Beth Alter, Director of Behavioral Health Diversion Services
for Dutchess Country, who has been a part of the county government for over 30
year in substance abuse and mental health services. Her topics on this program
are the life-saving medicine Narcan, the County HELPLINE, the Mobile Crisis
Intervention Team, and the Stabilization Center at 230 North Road in
Poughkeepsie. Her team offers training in the use of Narcan to reverse an opioid
overdose, which they will bring to any location in the country or provide to visitors
at the Stabilization Center. All the services mentioned here can be reached via
the HELPLINE, calling or texting to 845-485-9700. Narcan is an easy-to-
administer nasal spray that instantly blocks opioid action, although more than
one dose may be needed to reverse the drug in some cases. Ms. Alter makes a
good case why everyone from boy and girl scouts to Rotarians should learn to
use Narcan and have the drug handy for when needed (there is no effect if it is
not needed).
