Millbrook Schools Handle Shelter-in-Place (Aired on June 20 and 21, 2020)

Millbrook Rotarian Brian Fried, Assistant Superintendent for Business, Finance, and Operations at the Millbrook Central School District, visits RadioRotary to describe how the District is handling the dislocation of normal practices caused by the steps required by New York State to slow the spread of COVID-19. Schools in Dutchess County were all required to stop holding live classes in mid-March, with a significant amount of the school year unfinished. Among the steps that Mr. Fried describes are making sure that every student has broadband access and a computer so that they can participate with classes and in interactions with teachers or school psychologists; arranging with the cafeteria staff and drivers to see that 175 students under age 18 who need nutrition assistance get breakfast and lunch delivered 7 days a week; and maintaining school spirit with car parades and signs on the lawns of all graduating seniors, as well as planning a memorable graduation event. No one knows exactly what future problems must be faced, but this program reveals that the Millbrook Central Schools are getting ready for anything.

The E-Club of Wall Street (Aired on June 13 and 14, 2020)

Rotarian Jason Gonzales, president of the E-Club of Wall Street, visits RadioRotary via Zoom totell how the former Wall Street Rotary became an online E-club and still continues to do good in the world. When the Rotary Club of Wall Street recognized in 2018 that it was barely hanging in with only 10 active members, the members decided to reconstitute as an online E-club, which today is up to 32 members in 13 countries around the world. The members meet by Zoom from their respective locations at noon (Wall Street time—it is 6:00 p.m. for European members). Just like in-person Rotary clubs, the E-club has speakers (often more famous than most Rotary clubs host) and engages in activities to help the community, hosting Rotary scholars, raising funds for good causes, and volunteering approximately 10 hours for every member. Mr. Gonzalez got interested in Rotary while in Rotaract at Pace University in New York. Today he works for UNESCO at the United Nations, where one of his duties has been to plan the annual Rotary UN Day. There is much more of interest in this interview than we have room to include here, so be sure to listen to the show.

Rotary Rises to the COVID-19 Challenge (Aired on June 6 and 7, 2020)

Millbrook Rotarian Cindie Kish, the current 2710 District Governor, visits RadioRotary via Zoom, to tell how the 55 Mid-Hudson Rotary Clubs are helping their communities and the world get through the pandemic. Unlike many businesses and other organizations, Rotary in the Mid-Hudson has not gone dark. Clubs have found innovative ways to meet and also members are able to join weekly District meetings online. The good work of Rotary has not stopped, even though many traditional fundraisers have had to be cancelled; Rotary clubs have found ways to support not only such organizations as food pantries, but local businesses as well—for example, some clubs that can no longer meet at their favorite restaurant have helped support it by collecting take-out meals and distributing them to club members. The high-school Interact clubs sponsored by Rotary can no longer meet with schools closed, but they can still do good, perhaps by sending thank-you notes to health workers. Listen to the show to learn about the many ways Rotary continues to do good in the world in spite of the current crisis.
