Sparrow’s Nest in Covid Pandemic (Aired on March 28, 2021)

Krista Jones, the founder of Sparrow’s Nest, the charity that provides food to the families of persons who have cancer, returns to RadioRotary to tell how the program has fared through the covid pandemic and also to promote the virtual Superhero Challenge. The Superhero Challenge is a healthy way to raise money for the charity by committing to run or walk a specific amount and also committing to donate to the program, which in 2021 was feeding two meals weekly to some 300 persons. Although Ms. Jones has continued to cook for the program, she has had to dismiss the many volunteers who helped prepare the meals before the onset of the covid pandemic, so she does it all herself with one helper. The food is geared to what a family would eat. Generally the person with cancer does not reach out to Sparrow’s Nest—often the oncologist will do that, or sometimes a family member who sees the need. Today Sparrow’s Nest operates from a kitchen in a mall, but Ms. Jones is hoping to move the project to its own farm someday.

Newburgh Rotary Honors Women (Aired on March 21, 2021)

RadioRotary brings to the air two members of the Greater Newburgh Rotary Club, President Elect, Arlette Murrain, and President Andrew Ciccone; they tell listeners about their club’s exciting awards program on March 31, 2021,which will celebrate International Women’s Day and International Women’s History Month. Members of the Newburgh and Orange County communities will be honored for community service, contributions to education and health care, and other humanitarian service.  At the same ceremony five who made significant community contributions in the past will be commemorated. Among the honorees from the past will be Bunny Webb, who was the first woman president of Rotary District 7210. The honorees active today include Hyun Chin Kim, Orange County Judge, Karen Mejia, Newburgh Councilwoman, Joan Cusack-McGuirk, CEO Montefiore St Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, Mary McTamaney, Newburgh Historian, and Ruth Smith, Community Service. The 150th Anniversary of Dutchess SPCA (Aired on March 14, 2021)

Executive Director Lynne Meloccaro of the Dutchess County SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) visits RadioRotary via Zoom tocommemorate the 150 th anniversary of the organization, thought to be the 2 nd-oldest SPCA organization in the United States, formed in 1871, just 5 years aftethe first in the US, the New York SPCA. Like all SPCA organizations, it is a nonprofit that arranges to have stray animals, mostly cats and dogs, adopted by families. In a new program for Dutchess SPCA, the animals may be placed in foster homes instead of being kept at a central location. Although best known for dealing with strayed animals, Dutchess SPCA also has arrangements with many of the towns in the country to be the animal-control officers for the town. There is much more presented in this hour concerning the good works of Dutchess SPCA.

Poughkeepsie’s Juvenile Intervention Program (Aired on February 28, 2021)

Satara Brown, founder of Rebuilding Our Children and Community, Inc. returns to RadioRotary to tell about her work with the juvenile division of the City of Poughkeepsie police department, especially the pilot Juvenile Intervention Program. Ms. Brown has been heavily involved in helping young persons mature and find better lives for a long time, including (but hardly limited to) founding Rebuilding Our Children and Community, Inc. Ms. Brown also is Director of Communications and Community Engagement for Day One Early Learning Community in Poughkeepsie (which is scheduled to open in 2021) and a board member of the Poughkeepsie Schools Foundation. The new Juvenile Interventions program, open to any youth needed more support, includes weekly meetings and monthly workshops, often in connection with the program’s local partners such as Hudson River Housing, Dutchess Country Probation, Mental Health American of Dutchess County, and many others.
