Rotary Business Directory Funds Community Nonprofits (Aired on March 20, 2022)

For this show Radio Rotary was joined by Jan Miller, current president of Millbrook Rotary (Sarah O’Connell-Claitor’s club), and Mona Staaf-Gunther, past president of Millbrook Rotary, who is spearheading the 2021-22 edition of the “Millbrook Rotary Business Directory,” a publication that not only provides vital services for Central and North-Central Dutchess County but also is the source of funds to help support local nonprofits and other ways of doing good in the world. Because of the effects of the pandemic, improving the food supply locally has been a particular focus, with the Directory income helping support at least six local food pantries. Funding is also provided for other Rotary goals, such as the Youth Exchange (YEX) that brings high-school students from around the world to Millbrook for a school year and also sends Millbrook students to foreign lands. The advertising in the Directory that pays for this outreach, feature in some 5,000 free copies of a full-color book, is also a guide for locals and tourists to the many services available in Dutchess Country.

7210 District Governor 2020-21 Report (Aired on June 27, 2021)

Rotary District Governor (DG), Toni Marmo (Highland Rotary), visited RadioRotary and described some of the highlights of his 2020-21 tenure. A District Governor is a well-trained leader, overseeing the 56 clubs in the 8- country district from July 1 to June 30, usually visiting each club in person during that year. Because of Covid-19 restrictions, DG Marmo joined many Zoom meetings, but somehow managed 63 in person visits—most clubs twice, counting online meetings. One Covid-related charitable work during the year was participation in the Million Mask Challenge, with District clubs passing out about 275,000 masks to local community organizations. Another highlight has been the increase in membership after several years of decline, adding a net of about 60 members to the 1,600—DG Marmo has agreed to be the District Membership Chair for 2021-22, continuing his work in this important area. He has not ignored his home club during the year, either. Highland’s big project for years has been Ribfest, but because of Covid restrictions, in 2020 and 2021 the Ribfest has been replaced by Rotary’s Ribfest & Restaurant Revival, helping local restaurants survive the various lockdowns and other problems associated with the pandemic. There is much more of interest in this interview.

Hamburg Rotary International Convention, Part 3 (Aired October 26 and 27, 2019)

The 2019 Rotary International Convention in Hamburg, Germany, was covered by
RadioRotary interviewers; this is the third report on some of what they found. A Rotarian
from the Netherlands told RadioRotary about efforts of her organization to reduce
human trafficking with education and empowerment of youth. Another NGO (non-
governmental organization) called Medair works to provide quick relief and shelter in
cases of disasters or civil conflict. A Rotarian physician from Johns Hopkins in Maryland
is part of the Rotary Action Group (RAG) on Mental Health Initiatives, working primarily
to reduce high suicide rates in Lithuania and India. A Rotarian from Zambia describes
efforts to provide new professions for commercial sex workers; he was promoting the
Rotarian shirts made by former sex workers who now operate sewing machines. And,
closer to home, Rotarians from Media, Pennsylvania (Jeffrey Cadorette), and Millbrook,
New York (Cindie Kish), tell about the polio eradication program known as “Drop to
Zero” and the possible drop to ground level from the skies for six Rotarians, including
Cindie and Jeffrey, if goals are met.
