Medical Reserve Corps of Dutchess (Aired on July 11 and 13, 2020)

RadioRotary interviews (via Zoom) Joe Ryan, the Coordinator for the Medical Reserve Corp of Dutchess County, an organization of 1,004 volunteers currently who provide disaster relief, emergency-medical training, and related services throughout Dutchess County. The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a nationwide organization designed to prepare for and help hand disaster relief, started after the September 11, 2001, attack. The Dutchess Country branch currently has 1,004 volunteers, and also Mr. Ryan has also won the nationally given Mentor Award for its coordination with surrounding county MRCs. The volunteers are almost exactly split between medical personnel and those with no prior medical training. The many preparedness programs offered by Dutchess MRC include classes in stopping bleeding, overdose recovery, suicide prevention, tick safety, and hands-only CPR. During the COVID-19 epidemic, MRC has been part of contact tracing, monitoring victims who are living at home, and providing food or prescription delivery when necessary. The E-Club of Wall Street (Aired on June 13 and 14, 2020)

 

Rotarian Jason Gonzales, president of the E-Club of Wall Street, visits RadioRotary via Zoom totell how the former Wall Street Rotary became an online E-club and still continues to do good in the world. When the Rotary Club of Wall Street recognized in 2018 that it was barely hanging in with only 10 active members, the members decided to reconstitute as an online E-club, which today is up to 32 members in 13 countries around the world. The members meet by Zoom from their respective locations at noon (Wall Street time—it is 6:00 p.m. for European members). Just like in-person Rotary clubs, the E-club has speakers (often more famous than most Rotary clubs host) and engages in activities to help the community, hosting Rotary scholars, raising funds for good causes, and volunteering approximately 10 hours for every member. Mr. Gonzalez got interested in Rotary while in Rotaract at Pace University in New York. Today he works for UNESCO at the United Nations, where one of his duties has been to plan the annual Rotary UN Day. Hamburg Rotary International Convention, Part 3 (Aired October 26 and 27, 2019)

The 2019 Rotary International Convention in Hamburg, Germany, was covered by
RadioRotary interviewers; this is the third report on some of what they found. A Rotarian
from the Netherlands told RadioRotary about efforts of her organization to reduce
human trafficking with education and empowerment of youth. Another NGO (non-
governmental organization) called Medair works to provide quick relief and shelter in
cases of disasters or civil conflict. A Rotarian physician from Johns Hopkins in Maryland
is part of the Rotary Action Group (RAG) on Mental Health Initiatives, working primarily
to reduce high suicide rates in Lithuania and India. A Rotarian from Zambia describes
efforts to provide new professions for commercial sex workers; he was promoting the
Rotarian shirts made by former sex workers who now operate sewing machines. And,
closer to home, Rotarians from Media, Pennsylvania (Jeffrey Cadorette), and Millbrook,
New York (Cindie Kish), tell about the polio eradication program known as “Drop to
Zero” and the possible drop to ground level from the skies for six Rotarians, including
Cindie and Jeffrey, if goals are met.

Hamburg Rotary International Convention, Part 2 (Aired October 12 and 13, 2019)

 

RadioRotary interviewers discovered some great projects at the 2019 Rotary
International Convention in Hamburg, Germany. Rotarians and other humanitarian
groups are doing good around the world, improving hearing and sight, providing light
and shelter, and preventing polio and other communicable diseases. Rotarians for
Hearing work in Nigeria, South Africa, and even the United States, concentrating on
ways to provide aids to the hearing impaired, while the Eye Foundation of American
helps solve vision problems in newborn children. ShelterBox tents include not only the
supplies needed after for a whole family a disaster but also a LuminAID solar cube that
lights the night (and in some cases charges the phone). Vaccination is succeeding in
eliminating polio, but simple hand washing is one of the best ways to prevent
communicable diseases.
