Hamburg Rotary International Convention, Part 2 (Aired October 12 and 13, 2019)

RadioRotary interviewers discovered some great projects at the 2019 Rotary
International Convention in Hamburg, Germany. Rotarians and other humanitarian
groups are doing good around the world, improving hearing and sight, providing light
and shelter, and preventing polio and other communicable diseases. Rotarians for
Hearing work in Nigeria, South Africa, and even the United States, concentrating on
ways to provide aids to the hearing impaired, while the Eye Foundation of American
helps solve vision problems in newborn children. ShelterBox tents include not only the
supplies needed after for a whole family a disaster but also a LuminAID solar cube that
lights the night (and in some cases charges the phone). Vaccination is succeeding in
eliminating polio, but simple hand washing is one of the best ways to prevent
communicable diseases.

Donating to The Rotary Foundation (Aired On November 17 & 18, 2018)

RadioRotary welcomes Pleasant Valley Rotarian (and occasional RadioRotary
cohost) Dave Kruger, co-chair of individual giving for District 7210, to its
microphone to tell the audience about the principal charity arm of Rotary
International, The Rotary Foundation. The Rotary fellowship was founded in
1905 by Paul Harris principally as an informal club for business and professional
men, but soon its members began to perform community service. In 1917 then
Rotary president Arch Klumph started The Rotary Foundation to finance good
works locally and around the world. Since then, the Foundation has spent $3
billion on projects to promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water and
sanitation, save mothers and children, support education, and grow local
economies. The money comes mainly from individual Rotarians and others, with
special help from members of the Paul Harris Society, who pledge to donate
$1,000 a year to the Foundation. One reason that giving to the Foundation is
popular is that it has the highest rating from organizations which rate nonprofits,
such as Charity Navigator.

Rotary International Show From Toronto Canada Show 2 (Aired on July 14 and July 15th, 2018)

Toronto Rotary International Convention, Part 2 (Aired on July 14 and 15, 2018)

Here are four more stories of people putting service before self from the 2018 Toronto Rotary International Convention. Sole 4 Souls not only distributes shoes and other clothing around the world, but also creates sustainable jobs in third-world nations. World Bicycle Relief does not provide relief for bicycles, but provides bicycles for relief of travel problems in places with bad roads or none. The specially designed bicycles are strong enough for bumpy rides and easy to
repair if needed. Rise Against Hunger recognizes that there is food enough for every person on the planet, but 815 million people, many of them children, go hungry because food is unequally distributed. The volunteers at Rise Against Hunger work on assembly lines to produce nourishing food packages; often the volunteers are Rotarians. Rotary is most known, however, for its steps to end polio now, which is discussed by Al Bonney of Traverse City Rotary. Mr. Bonney emphasizes the problems of post-polio syndrome as well as updating the fight to eradicate polio.

Rotary International Convention From Atlanta GA (Aired on February 3rd & 4th, 2018) Show # 10

Once again RadioRotary brings listeners interviews with Rotarians attending the Convention who describe the Rotary programs that have brought them to Atlanta.  Regular listeners to RadioRotary know about ShelterBox, but in this program they learn new ways the ShelterBox teams are helping disaster victim around the world. Also, listeners are probably familiar with Rotary’s role in polio eradication, but there is also a Rotarian Action Group (RAG) that helps survivors of polio, including those whose symptoms return many years afterward. Health professionals of all types can be part of the Fellowship of Rotarian Doctors and Health Professionals, which provides opportunities to help solve medical problems for disadvantaged people everywhere. Youth Exchange includes other Rotary programs, notably the one-school-year exchange of high-school students, part of Rotary’s goal of promoting peace.
