Rotary Business Directory Funds Community Nonprofits (Aired on March 20, 2022)

For this show Radio Rotary was joined by Jan Miller, current president of Millbrook Rotary (Sarah O’Connell-Claitor’s club), and Mona Staaf-Gunther, past president of Millbrook Rotary, who is spearheading the 2021-22 edition of the “Millbrook Rotary Business Directory,” a publication that not only provides vital services for Central and North-Central Dutchess County but also is the source of funds to help support local nonprofits and other ways of doing good in the world. Because of the effects of the pandemic, improving the food supply locally has been a particular focus, with the Directory income helping support at least six local food pantries. Funding is also provided for other Rotary goals, such as the Youth Exchange (YEX) that brings high-school students from around the world to Millbrook for a school year and also sends Millbrook students to foreign lands. The advertising in the Directory that pays for this outreach, feature in some 5,000 free copies of a full-color book, is also a guide for locals and tourists to the many services available in Dutchess Country.

Southern Dutchess Rotary Programs (Aired on December 26, 2021)

Southern Ulster Rotarians Will Ferrell (club president) and Paul Daniels (vice president) visit RadioRotary via Zoom to discuss the community and international projects that the club supports. Southern Dutchess was originally named “Plattekill Rotary,” but with members from nearby towns in Ulster Country and even some from nearby Orange Country, the current name seems more
appropriate. The good work that Southern Dutchess Rotarians do goes from the very local, such as providing donuts and hot chocolate at the annual Plattekill tree lighting, to the International, including helping fund improvements in a village in Guatemala. Much of their emphasis is on youth: a basketball and volleyball program for elementary school, providing summer camps for needy children, and sending local students abroad on Rotary Youth Exchange. Southern Dutchess Rotary is also proud to be a ShelterBox Hero, annually supporting Shelterbox disaster relief.

Youth Experiences Abroad: Germany (Aired on August 17 and 18, 2019)

RadioRotary co-hosts Sarah O’Connell–Claitor and Jonah Triebwasser interview
Millbrook High School student Joe Richard about his year spent in Germany as
part of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. Participants are generally high-
school students and are sponsored by a Rotary Club to spend a school year
abroad in a country with a different language from their native tongue, living with
local families and attending a local school. Mr. Richard lived with three different
families and attended school in Lüneburg, Germany, a small city 35 miles
southeast of Hamburg. Mr. Richard, who plays the tenor saxophone, not only
joined his school’s big swing band, but also became a part of several local
ensembles, helping him assimilate as he also learned German, his coursework,
and the customs of Germany.

More than Just a Service Club (Aired on July 27 and 28, 2019)

The dynamic duo of Doris and Ken Obremski, both Past District Governors of
Rotary District 7210 and both members of The Rotary Club of Goshen, New York
(Ken is once again president of the club after a long hiatus), come to
RadioRotary to be interviewed by old friends Sarah O’Connell-Claitor and Jonah
Triebwasser. Much of the interview consists of reminiscences of Ken’s 50 active
years in Rotary (by January 2020) and Doris’ 26 years joining her husband in its
work– from immunizations for children in the US and against polio abroad,
international exchanges, to disaster relief after Katrina. RadioRotary started
during Doris’ tenure as District Governor and might not have made it through its
early years without her help and encouragement. The pair joined Rotary because
they wanted to be part of something important and it changed their lives and their
family’s lives for the better.
