Working for Peace with the UN (Aired March 14 & 15, 2020)

Millbrook Rotarian Jim Lubin and his wife Diane visit RadioRotary to tell how they came to be Peacekeepers for the United Nations and involved in two of the more significant conflicts at the end of the 20th Century. Jim Lubin grew up in England during World War II and as a boy observed the American Air Force heading for the D-Day invasion of Europe. As a young man be made a career of proofreading, which eventually led to his being an editor at the United Nations, where he met and married Diane. Jim thought he could do more for world peace by volunteering to lead missions that the UN conducts to help maintain peace during conflicts. When he went to oversee elections in the new nation of Namibia in southwest Africa, Diane joined him on the mission—the first husband and wife team of UN Peacekeepers. With a successful mission to Namibia behind them, the pair volunteered to help resolve the conflicts between the new nations that used to be part of Yugoslavia, but this active war was between ethnic groups who were out to kill each other and who were not going to stop just because the UN was there. Having survived the war in Croatia, Jim and Diane retired to the United States. Diane was from Oneonta, NY, and had frequently driven the Taconic to New York City, so when the Lubins looked for a retirement home, exiting the Taconic at Millbrook became the key.

More than Just a Service Club (Aired on July 27 and 28, 2019)

The dynamic duo of Doris and Ken Obremski, both Past District Governors of
Rotary District 7210 and both members of The Rotary Club of Goshen, New York
(Ken is once again president of the club after a long hiatus), come to
RadioRotary to be interviewed by old friends Sarah O’Connell-Claitor and Jonah
Triebwasser. Much of the interview consists of reminiscences of Ken’s 50 active
years in Rotary (by January 2020) and Doris’ 26 years joining her husband in its
work– from immunizations for children in the US and against polio abroad,
international exchanges, to disaster relief after Katrina. RadioRotary started
during Doris’ tenure as District Governor and might not have made it through its
early years without her help and encouragement. The pair joined Rotary because
they wanted to be part of something important and it changed their lives and their
family’s lives for the better.

Taste of Greater Newburgh (Aired On September 22 & 23, 2018)

Newburgh Rotarians Doug Sturomski and Andrew Ciccone visit RadioRotary to
describe the club’s annual fundraiser, The Taste of Greater Newburgh, which
takes place under a tent on the campus of Mount Saint Mary College, making it a
rain-or-shine event. Over two-dozen food or drink vendors provide an all-you-
can-eat-or-drink experience for a modest per-person fee. The money raised
each year supports the numerous community activities of Newburgh Rotary,
ranging from Meals on Wheels and school supplies for needy children to the
Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra. Doug Sturomski is also active in the
Peace Pole Project, helping install poles with the message “May peace prevail on
Earth” in eight languages around the eight counties of Rotary District 7210.
Andrew Ciccone in addition to Rotary duties is on the Board of the Clove Creek
Dinner Theater in Fishkill, a frequent venue for charitable fundraisers.

Doug Sturmonski on Peace and Polio Walks (Aired on May 12 and May 13, 2018)

Our Rotary District’s Peace Ambassador (Aired on May 12 and 13, 2018)
Greater Newburgh Rotarian Doug Sturomski, the unofficial Peace Ambassador for Rotary District 7210, returns to RadioRotary to report on two projects related to his peace mission. In this interview, he announces that he recently has dedicated or planted 10 Peace Poles at local schools. The Peace Poles for Rotary District 7210 are 8-feet high, resemble the Washington Monument, and have the message “May Peace prevail upon the Earth” in 8 languages. Another District peace project that he describes is the “Walk for Peace and Polio” at the Walkway over the Hudson, which not only promoted peace but also raised money to support the eradication of polio, one of the main goals of The Rotary
Foundation in recent years.
