Climate Crisis and Climate Justice (Aired on August 8, 2021)

Ugandan Climate Crisis activist Vanessa Nakate visits RadioRotary from Africa via Zoom for an essential account of how climate change has become a crisis, and about the need for Climate Justice. Her home nation of Uganda, in East Africa along Lake Victoria, has been ravaged by climate-induced floods in the east and west and climate-induced drought in the north. While major lakes in the western United States are drying up, Lake Victoria has risen to the highest level in 120 years, flooding homes and infrastructure along the shore. The same disasters that are injuring Uganda are occurring across the globe as well as fires in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Africa, which contributes only 3% of the atmospheric gases that are causing the Climate Crisis, is just as endangered as the Western nations, China, and Japan, which produce about half of the carbon dioxide and methane globally. Climate Justice is a movement to equalize the attempts are remediation.

Guatemala Literacy Project (Aired on May 30, 2021)

Rotarian Joe Berninger from the Rotary e-Club of Ohio Pathways joins RadioRotary to tell about a work that was called “the gold standard of Rotary projects” by past Rotary President Ian Riseley (2017-18)—the Guatemala Literary Project. More than 600 clubs from 80 districts have been working together since 1997 to improve education for underserved students in Guatemala. In that time, nearly 225,500 students have been made more literate—both for reading and in technology– through sustainable programs that are tested and proven to work.

A New Kind of Rotary Club (Aired on February 21, 2021)

On February 6, 2021, the Rotary Passport Club of District 7210 had its first meeting. RadioRotary got on the case immediately, interviewing Passport Club President Samantha Alvareng, who is the guest on this show. Passport clubs are a new way for busy people to become Rotarian, since they typically meet only four times a year, although the District 7210 club is also having a Zoom meeting once a month. The basic idea is that a Passport Rotarian can work on the projects of other clubs and attend their meetings when convenient, but the Passport club is all about service and the District 7210 club already has started some service projects of their own. In some ways the Passports are like any other Rotary club, with officers, a Board, and dues—but the members have a lot of freedom to work on service at their own schedule. Since they do not meet weekly for meals, membership in a Passport club is less expensive than other Rotary clubs—so clubs often have more young members and retired members than usual. A Young Person’s Path through Rotary (Aired on February 14, 2021)

Rotarian Marissa Williams of the Stow-Munroe Falls (Ohio) Rotary Club, who visited RadioRotary via Zoom for this show, has a longer association with Rotary than her year and a half in her Rotary Club. It started when she was a freshman at Millbrook High School when she joined that school’s Interact Club (sponsored by Millbrook Rotary). During her four years of high school she continued to be active and was president of the club twice. As she approached graduation she was awarded the principal scholarship Millbrook Rotary offers. She continued a life of service in college as part of the Circle K service club, then spent two years in the Peace Corps before settling down in Akron, immediately joining the Rotary Club near her home. At 24, she became part of the future of Rotary.
