A Young Person’s Path through Rotary (Aired on February 14, 2021)

Rotarian Marissa Williams of the Stow-Munroe Falls (Ohio) Rotary Club, who visited RadioRotary via Zoom for this show, has a longer association with Rotary than her year and a half in her Rotary Club. It started when she was a freshman at Millbrook High School when she joined that school’s Interact Club (sponsored by Millbrook Rotary). During her four years of high school she continued to be active and was president of the club twice. As she approached graduation she was awarded the principal scholarship Millbrook Rotary offers. She continued a life of service in college as part of the Circle K service club, then spent two years in the Peace Corps before settling down in Akron, immediately joining the Rotary Club near her home. At 24, she became part of the future of Rotary.

First Woman to Preside over RI (Aired on November 22, 2020)

RadioRotary is especially delighted to be able to interview Jennifer Jones, who for the Rotary Year 2022-23 will be president of Rotary International (RI), the first woman in the 115-year history of Rotary to achieve that high office. Until a little more than 30 years ago, there were no women officially in Rotary—a club in California that accepted women in 1977 was dropped from RI for this violation of rules. But ten years later the US Supreme Court ruled that Rotary could not reject members on the basis of gender, and US clubs began to admit women. The Canadian courts also recognized that Rotary clubs should be gender neutral and, in 1989, RI agreed, allowing clubs around the world to admit women members. President-nominee Jones, from the Windsor-Roseland Rotary Club (which spans Canada and the US), joined Rotary in 1997 and has been active at club and district levels ever since, becoming a director and a vice-president of RI. In her RadioRotary interview she tells her story and discusses how the Rotary Polio-Plus experience has provided thousands of workers who have been dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. She reveals that RI has officially added protection of the environment to the six areas of focus and speaks of her interest in making the young-persons Rotary, Rotaract, a gateway to the full Rotary experience.

Rotary International and Rotary Foundation CEO (Aired on October 18, 2020)

Through the magic of Zoom. RadioRotary interviews John Hewko, the General Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of both Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. As CEO he directs some 800 Rotary employees in the United States and around the world—Rotary has 1.2 million members worldwide, with only about 25% of them in the United States. Rotarians are committed to doing good in the world as well as making person connections with like-minded others. In addition to contributing $400 million for projects through The Rotary Foundation, Rotarians contribute about 47 million people hours to make those projects work—and these numbers do not count the gifts and projects of the 35,000 individual clubs that make up Rotary. With numbers like that, Rotary embarked on a huge project in 1985 (later joined but other international organizations) to eliminate polio. At this point they have succeeded everywhere except Pakistan and Afghanistan where there remain a few cases annually. Another emphasis of Rotary is enrolling youth in both projects to improve communities but also in supporting peace through annual youth exchanges
between countries around the world.
