Rotary Business Directory Funds Community Nonprofits (Aired on March 20, 2022)

For this show Radio Rotary was joined by Jan Miller, current president of Millbrook Rotary (Sarah O’Connell-Claitor’s club), and Mona Staaf-Gunther, past president of Millbrook Rotary, who is spearheading the 2021-22 edition of the “Millbrook Rotary Business Directory,” a publication that not only provides vital services for Central and North-Central Dutchess County but also is the source of funds to help support local nonprofits and other ways of doing good in the world. Because of the effects of the pandemic, improving the food supply locally has been a particular focus, with the Directory income helping support at least six local food pantries. Funding is also provided for other Rotary goals, such as the Youth Exchange (YEX) that brings high-school students from around the world to Millbrook for a school year and also sends Millbrook students to foreign lands. The advertising in the Directory that pays for this outreach, feature in some 5,000 free copies of a full-color book, is also a guide for locals and tourists to the many services available in Dutchess Country.

Southern Dutchess Rotary Programs (Aired on December 26, 2021)

Southern Ulster Rotarians Will Ferrell (club president) and Paul Daniels (vice president) visit RadioRotary via Zoom to discuss the community and international projects that the club supports. Southern Dutchess was originally named “Plattekill Rotary,” but with members from nearby towns in Ulster Country and even some from nearby Orange Country, the current name seems more
appropriate. The good work that Southern Dutchess Rotarians do goes from the very local, such as providing donuts and hot chocolate at the annual Plattekill tree lighting, to the International, including helping fund improvements in a village in Guatemala. Much of their emphasis is on youth: a basketball and volleyball program for elementary school, providing summer camps for needy children, and sending local students abroad on Rotary Youth Exchange. Southern Dutchess Rotary is also proud to be a ShelterBox Hero, annually supporting Shelterbox disaster relief.

Rotary’s First E-Club in District 7210 (Aired on October 24, 2021)

Fred Widman, president of the Rotary E-club of District 7210, joins Jonah Triebwasser and Sarah O’Connell-Claitor on RadioRotary to talk about the formation and present situation of the first-ever international E-club, which has its home base in the Hudson Valley but includes members from around the world, currently including Sweden, Brazil, Nigeria, India, and Turkey. The club has
regular Zoom meetings with guest speakers online one Saturday each month, but members can also attend their local Rotary club meetings when they have a chance. Also, members participate in service projects run by the local clubs or can do individual service and report back on their hours. The club began in 2010 when Ana Johnsen met a Rotarian from Nigeria and they conceived the idea of an international club, which Ana and her husband Knute Johnsen established. The club raises money primarily through a raffle for restaurant meals in high- class restaurants around the world, using the proceeds for such projects as purchase of oxygen generators for India, important during the Covid-19 pandemic, or participation in a global Foundation grant for a hospital in Brazil.

Phoenix: The Pleasant Valley Library (Aired July 18, 2021)

A Phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor according to legend, but the Pleasant Valley Free Library is doing the same in reality. Pleasant Valley Rotarian Dave Kruger, the current vice-president of the library board, returns to RadioRotary to provide the exciting details. Since a fire destroyed the interior of the library in 2018, operations have continued in a former supermarket donated rent-free to the library by Herb Redl Properties. Meanwhile, the Board has raised nearly $3 million to create a new building at the old site, keeping the still standing outer walls and adding new space on the ground floor to make a handicapped-accessible one-story library space from the former two-story 19th-century structure. The patron-and-staff usable portion of the building will be double the size of the previous structure—the old 2 nd floor will now be devoted to mechanical support. It is anticipated that the new building will be open early in 2022. The RadioRotary program also includes information about the small-but-mighty Pleasant Valley Rotary Club.
