Join Rotary for Service and Fellowship (Aired on November 20, 2022)

RadioRotary welcomes District 7210 Membership Chair and Past District Governor (2020-21) Highland Rotarian Tony Marmo who describes some of the many benefits of becoming a Rotarian. He personally likes the way that Rotary not only aids local community organizations but also has a global reach. With over 200 nations that have active Rotary clubs, Rotarians around the world can find partners to promote such goals as peace, literacy, clean water, maternal health, and disease prevention (notably the work toward eradicating polio). Rotary was founded in 1905 by four professionals who met weekly for lunch to plan community improvements. Today’s Rotarians have expanded their reach by including meetings for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and also by working with satellite clubs, with the high school and college adjuncts (Interact and Rotaract), and with online e-clubs.

District Governor 2022-23, Larry Palant (Aired on Sept. 25, 2022)

Each year Radio Rotary interviews the current District 7210 Governor (DG); for Rotary year 2022-23 the DG is Suffern Rotarian Larry Palant, who in 20 years of Rotary membership has previously handled a number of important assignments, including promoting ShelterBox and leading the Membership Committee. DG Palant discusses how the District focuses on different causes throughout the year, warm clothing in the fall, food security in the winter, and the environment in the spring. A relatively new focus, promoted by Rotary President Jennifer Jones, the first woman to head Rotary International, is DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion). Listen to the show to enjoy a couple of “Rotary Moments” with DG Palant and to learn about how “Imagine Rotary” works as the slogan for the 2022-23 Rotary Year.

Red Hook Rotary’s 2022 Activities (Aired on May 1, 2022)

In a rare all-live show, Radio Rotary’s co-hosts visit Red Hook Rotary’s meeting in Taste Budd’s Café to learn about some of the club’s activities. Dave Wright is heading the 2022 Apple Blossom Day, the street festival that starts the spring- summer season in Red Hook and Tivoli with hundreds of food and craft vendors and live music by local bands. Linda Greenblatt is the club’s chair for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), the week-long leadership training program for high-school sophomores. Tom Lynch is the advisor for the Red Hook High School Interact club, a junior edition of Rotary with similar goals of community service. Chris Chale not only handles the International Youth Exchange (YEX) or the club, but also is the YEX Chair for District 7210. YEX in District 7210 sends high school juniors or seniors to select nations where English is not the primary language and brings students from those countries to local Rotary clubs where the student spends an entire school year living with local families. There are several other club activities, including CLYNK, described on the program by current Red Hook Rotary President Jennifer van Voorhis. CLYNK locally is a service of Hannaford grocery, which collects bottles that return a deposit and funnels the savings to Red Hook Rotary, which uses the income to help support community projects.

Membership Needs in Rotary District 7210 (Aired on January 2, 2022)

Highland (NY) Rotarian and past District 7210 Governor (2020-21) Tony Marmo is now the District Membership Chair. He joined Jonah Triebwasser and Kathy Kruger on RadioRotary to discuss the value of Rotary membership and his plans to increase membership in the District. Although international membership in Rotary is stable or growing slightly, Rotary, like all other similar organizations in the United States, has been shrinking somewhat as fewer Americans participate in group activities. District 7210 is no exception, having lost about 40% of its members since its high point of recent years. But the members that remain are more diverse and often younger than the older white males that once were typical of Rotarians. Today, with varied types of clubs and flexibility in meetings/arrangements, Rotary remains an important force for doing good in the world. PDG Marmo describes several ways to increase membership, although the basic first step is that each current Rotarian needs to invite community-minded friends to join.
