Representing Rotary at the United Nations (Aired on February 11 and 12,
2017)

Rotary International has had a close relation with the United Nations even beforeits fou nding—the London Rotary Club helps start UNESCO and nearly 50 of the de legates to the conference that drafted the UN Charter in 1945 were Rotarians. This relationship became even closer when Rotary partnered with several UN divisions in 1988 for a campaign to eradicate polio. Several Rotarians represent Rotary at UN meetings, including Greater Newburgh Rotarian Knut Johnsen, who tells RadioRotary about the experience on this program. An important part ofthe UN representatives’ work is planning the annual Rotary Day at the United Nations, when the UN is closed to all but Rotarians. Mr. Johnsen is active in Rotary in many ways, especially with The Rotary Foundation, the charitable arm of Rotary that regularly receives the highest ratings from independent evaluators.
