A New Era of Scouting: Inspiring Youth

Aired June 23, 2024

In the evolving landscape of scouting in America, significant changes are underway to create a more inclusive environment. Dana Kuhns, an executive of the Rip Van Winkle Council in Ulster County and a dedicated Rotarian, shares insights into the recent developments within the organization traditionally known as the Boy Scouts of America. The organization, reflecting its progressive approach, is set to change its name to Scouting America by February 8, 2025, a date that coincides with scouting's historical inception in 1910.

This change comes after the inclusion of girls into the program, a transformative move that began five years ago with girls joining the Cub Scout program and later establishing scout troops specifically for girls. This inclusion has led to significant participation, with approximately 175,000 girls now involved across various scouting programs. "Initially, they came into the Cub Scout program, and a year later, we started having scout troops for girls," Dana explains. The name change to Scouting America aims to better reflect the diversity and inclusivity of the program, welcoming both boys and girls under a unified identity.

The shift towards a coeducational model aligns with global trends where scouting activities involve both genders, promoting equality and mutual respect. Dana notes, "We have now grown to having a hundred and 75,000 girls involved in our program." This evolution in scouting not only broadens the opportunities for all youth but also enriches the experience by fostering a diverse community where everyone can learn and grow together.

While Scouting America and the Girl Scouts of America will remain separate entities with distinct programs and leadership, the inclusive nature of Scouting America is poised to offer a robust platform for youth development. Dana emphasizes that the core activities and merit badge programs remain integral to scouting's educational mission, providing opportunities for personal development, leadership, and community service.

As scouting in America continues to adapt and evolve, the commitment to shaping young lives through adventures, skill-building, and civic engagement remains steadfast. Dana Kuhns and fellow leaders look forward to ushering in a new era of scouting that celebrates diversity and inclusivity, ensuring every child has the opportunity to partake in the rich traditions and valuable life lessons that scouting offers.
