Celebrating 40 Years of Community Assistance with the People for People Fund

Aired May 18th 2025

The People for People Fund has been a cornerstone of financial support in Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster counties for 40 years. Founded in 1985 through the combined efforts of the Times Herald Record and the Junior League of Orange County, the fund aims to provide financial assistance to working individuals who experience an unexpected financial hurdle.

A 40-Year Legacy of Assistance

Over four decades, the People for People Fund has distributed over $5.4 million to those in need, a figure that highlights the tremendous impact they've made on countless lives. This initiative has been described as "one neighbor helping another," reflecting the community-focused approach that has defined their mission from the beginning.

Marcy Clark, the current Director, has been with the organization for nearly 25 years. Her dedication to helping others is evident as she mentions, "We offer financial assistance to the hardworking individuals who have a recent and unexpected event that has given them momentary financial distress. It's one-time assistance, and we have the expectation that the problem will be resolved and self-sufficiency once again continues."

Support in Times of Need

The organization focuses on people living paycheck to paycheck who are affected by unforeseen circumstances such as car repairs, illnesses, or accidents. Clark explains, "We help by paying a bill on their behalf and hopefully, they will be back on the road again to self-sufficiency." This policy allows them to aid with bills concerning utilities, car repairs, and even short-term rent issues, ensuring that working individuals can continue to meet their responsibilities even when facing financial distress.

Community Engagement and Future Plans

The People for People Fund is maintained by a loyal volunteer base and generous community donors. The staff consists of volunteers who thoroughly assess each applicant's situation to determine eligibility and potential avenues of financial support.

Key to their efforts is outreach both for donations and for seeking eligible applicants. "We're always seeking grants out from the business community," Clark mentions, emphasizing the ongoing need for funding and volunteer assistance.

Celebrating a Milestone

In October, the Fund plans to celebrate its 40th anniversary with a community breakfast—details that showcase their continuing commitment to fostering local support and awareness. These events not only celebrate their achievements but also aim to attract more supporters and volunteers to join their cause.

For those interested in supporting the People for People Fund, volunteering, or requiring assistance, they are encouraged to contact the organization by phone at (845) 343-1663 or through their website: peopleforpeoplefund.org. As Marcy Clark puts it, "It's not hitting the lottery," but it provides critical, targeted assistance in times of need.

Join in celebrating their achievements and step into their mission of helping one another in times of financial crisis. Your support can make a significant difference in someone's life, just as the People for People Fund has done for 40 years.
