Empowering Veterans: Mental Health Support
(Aired April 7th, 2024)

Alyssa Carrion, the Director of Veterans Programs at Mental Health America (MHA) of Dutchess County, plays a crucial role in supporting the mental health needs of the community, especially veterans. With a focus on comprehensive services like case management, sober housing, and peer advocacy, MHA is a beacon of support. During challenging times, Carrion notes, "Coming out of COVID and continuing on up until now, it has been significantly busier than it was before," highlighting the increased demand for mental health services.
Veterans face unique challenges, and Carrion, a U.S. Army veteran and West Point graduate, brings personal experience and a deep understanding of their needs. "Housing is the biggest challenge that we have," she explains, emphasizing the struggles veterans face with inflation and fixed incomes. Her commitment is evident as she oversees programs that provide crucial services like suicide prevention, employment support, and housing assistance. Carrion proudly states, "They work countless hours to make sure that every veteran who walks through our door is taken care of."
MHA of Dutchess County stands as a pillar in the community, offering all services free of charge to veterans, advocating for reduced stigma, and providing an array of support mechanisms to ensure no one has to face their struggles alone. Carrion's leadership and the organization's commitment to service highlight the ongoing need for community-based mental health support, especially for those who have served their country.
