How Granny's Respond is Making a Difference for Immigrants

Aired January 5th, 2025

Empowering Compassionate Action

Granny's Respond, an inspiring organization founded in 2018, has been at the forefront of assisting immigrant families across the United States. Key to its efforts is Valerie Carlyle, whose passionate advocacy has galvanized communities to provide support where it's most needed. Carlyle explains the organization's mission: "We're dedicated to helping the immigrant community survive and thrive in our country."

A Grassroots Beginning

The motivation for Granny's Respond stemmed from the deeply moving experiences observed on the southern border, where immigrant children were being separated from their families. Outrage over this humanitarian crisis led to a proactive network of volunteers journeying from various corners of the nation to offer support and solace to affected families. Following their initial visits, chapters of Granny's Respond started forming, aiming to bring aid directly to migrant bus stations and communities across the U.S.

Holistic Support for Immigrants

Carlyle stresses that the organization's mission extends beyond providing immediate relief. "We realized that many immigrants were traveling vast distances across the country to reach their final destinations. So, we set up chapters that could support them at various bus stations with essentials like information, food, and blankets," she notes.

One of the organization's impactful initiatives is offering English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. These classes play a crucial role in helping immigrants integrate into society and improve their employment prospects. Additionally, as Carlyle points out, Granny's Respond provides assistance with legal processes, ensuring immigrants understand and claim their rights. This often includes guiding families through asylum applications and other legal matters.

Community Involvement and Empowerment

Granny's Respond has also been instrumental in forming alliances with local pastors and community organizations to deliver aid and support. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, exposing the vulnerabilities of migrant workers, Granny's Respond quickly pivoted to address these challenges, providing hygiene items and financial support for basic necessities like food and medicine.

A Vision for the Future

As societal and political pressures on immigrants mount, Granny's Respond remains committed to its mission of fostering dignity and providing resources to those in need. Carlyle notes the importance of their ongoing efforts: "We want to make sure people know what their rights are and continue to help where we can."

For anyone inspired to contribute or learn more about their initiatives, they can visit the Granny's Respond website at grannysrespond.org. This collective movement welcomes volunteers from all walks of life, including those who can assist with everyday tasks such as making welcome bags, driving, or offering financial support.

Granny's Respond has shown that a community united in compassion can significantly impact and help reshape the narrative around immigration in America. As Valerie Carlyle affirms, "It's very gratifying to help them find a way to succeed. Their success is our success."
