Join Rotary's Epic Day of Service: Making a Difference in 2025

Aired March 9th 2025

Rotary International, a global community service organization with over 1.4 million members and 30,000 clubs worldwide, is preparing for its annual Epic Day of Service on May 17th, 2025. This event, which unites districts across the globe, aims to enhance local communities through various service projects. The efforts exemplify Rotary's commitment to its motto: "Service Above Self."

David Green, a past district governor and an active participant in Rotary’s initiatives, has been at the forefront of organizing and promoting this event. "Epic Day of Service is an opportunity for Rotary to go out in the community, perform community service, and engage the public," Green emphasizes. He highlights the importance of projects that cater to community needs, ensuring that each initiative makes a tangible difference.

The Epic Day of Service began in Massachusetts in 2022 when two districts collaborated to serve their communities. Now, it has expanded to include 21 districts, encompassing more than 1,200 Rotary clubs across 10 states and reaching international borders in seven countries, including Canada, Australia, and Brazil. This rapid growth reflects the universal appeal and necessity of community service.

Projects on this special day vary widely, from conducting blood drives and cleaning up highways to organizing food and clothing drives. “What’s important is actually to go out in the community and assess a need,” notes Green. In the Hudson Valley, examples from previous years have included painting gazebos, placing American flags at cemeteries, and organizing music and dance events for group homes.

Rotary's aim is not just immediate improvement but also fostering long-term community engagement. "It's being involved in your community that’s so important," Green shares. Beyond service, these projects also serve as a platform for raising awareness about the benefits of Rotary and increasing membership.

Participation extends beyond Rotarians, with an open invitation to community members to join in. Scouts, church and synagogue groups, and other local organizations are encouraged to collaborate with Rotary clubs. Green enthusiastically invites everyone to visit the Epic Day of Service website, epicdayofservice.org, where individuals can find projects, learn more, and even contribute financially to specific initiatives.
