Addressing Mental Health Challenges in Dutchess County
Aired July 6th 2025

Mental Health America of Dutchess County (MHA) is a crucial not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing support and resources for those struggling with mental health and addiction issues. Andrew O'Grady, a prominent figure in MHA, plays a significant role in offering accessible mental health services to the community. Under his leadership, the organization has expanded its programs and outreach to cover a wide geographic area, including services in Orange, Green, and Columbia Counties.
Andrew O'Grady emphasizes the importance of addressing mental health openly and without stigma. He explains, "If you asked a hundred people in a room, you would find that 20 of them had the same concerns and issues and feelings that you have." The stigma surrounding mental illness often deters individuals from seeking help, but O'Grady and MHA work tirelessly to break down these barriers.
MHA offers a comprehensive range of services, including the innovative Echo Program, which places behavioral health specialists within local police departments. This initiative helps bridge the gap between the community and law enforcement by providing resources and support to those experiencing mental health crises. As O'Grady notes, "The police in our communities are dealing about 90 percent of the time with people that have some type of mental health or addiction issue." By embedding mental health professionals within the police force, MHA has improved community relations and provided vital assistance to those in need.
For veterans in the community, MHA offers dedicated services at a one-stop shop in Pleasant Valley, increasing accessibility and support for those who have served our country. In addition, MHA provides housing and long-term support for individuals recovering from addiction through its halfway houses, allowing them to rebuild their lives and communities.

The website features an "Ask an Expert" section where individuals can submit questions or concerns and receive timely responses.
This outreach and dedication to mental health awareness and support is vital for improving the lives of many individuals within the community. By advocating for prevention, support, and public education, Andrew O'Grady and MHA remain steadfast in their mission to ensure that mental health is prioritized and that help is readily available to those who need it most.
