Sparrows Nest: Delivering Comfort and Care to Cancer Patients in the Hudson Valley

Aired June 22nd 2025

Sparrows Nest, a heartwarming charity in the Hudson Valley, is making a significant difference in the lives of individuals and families facing cancer diagnoses. Under the dedicated leadership of Krista Jones, Sparrows Nest prepares and delivers homemade, nutritious meals to support those in need during their treatment journey.

Krista Jones, who started Sparrows Nest after witnessing the struggles of her friend Kathy, emphasizes, "A cancer diagnosis throws you into a completely different financial bracket," highlighting the charity's commitment to providing meals at no cost regardless of income. This effort ensures that patients and their families receive the nutrition they need without the burden of additional expenses or stress.

The charity's impressive milestone of preparing and delivering 1 million servings speaks to its impact, as it continues to expand its reach across Duchess, Putnam, Orange, and Ulster counties. As Jones notes, "We have fed. We're creeping up to 4,000 individuals," showcasing the extensive support network established through community involvement.

One of the charity's most successful fundraising events is the annual superhero-themed walk and run at Barton Orchards, which raised $137,000 even in rainy conditions. Jones reflects on the day, stating, "It is a first world problem... a cancer patient is going through adversity." This event, along with an innovative pre-event online challenge, encourages community health while generating vital funds.

Looking forward, Sparrows Nest is excited to unveil a new kitchen addition, thanks to a generous $80,000 donation from the Litsky family. This state-of-the-art oven will enable them to increase their capacity from baking 60 to 120 pies per hour, supporting their goal of selling over 2,000 homemade apple pies annually during Thanksgiving.

Community members are encouraged to get involved with Sparrows Nest by volunteering, donating, or attending the upcoming Farm to Table Gala on September 26th, hosted at their newly expanded facility across from the Beekman Library. This special event will offer a unique dining experience, mirroring the comforting meals Sparrows Nest provides to its recipients.

Join the Sparrow Circle to become a recurring donor and help make a tangible difference in the lives of those battling cancer. As Jones passionately advocates, "At the end of the day, how do you not do everything you can when somebody is sick?"
