Celebrating Community and Compassion: The Blessing of the Animals
Aired April 20th 2025
Embracing the Human-Animal Bond at the Blessing of the Animals
In a vibrant celebration of compassion and community, the town of Rhinebeck, NY, will once again host the much-anticipated Blessing of the Animals. This enriching event, organized by the Third Lutheran Church, offers a unique opportunity for families to share in the joy of nurturing the human-animal bond.
The Blessing of the Animals is set for Saturday, May 17th, starting at noon at 31 Livingston Street. If weather does not cooperate, a rain date is scheduled for Sunday, May 18th, starting at 1:00 PM. This event is non-sectarian and open to everyone, whether you arrive with a pet or on your own. "All are welcome," emphasizes Rosemary Joyce, a key organizer. "It's a special day of free family fun."
Event Highlights
The event promises a variety of exhibits and activities that highlight the significance of kindness and empathy towards animals. This year, attendees can look forward to interactive exhibits by local charities and their ambassador animals. Dr. Danielle St. Pierre, founder of Sunny P'S Veterinary Services, will host a "Ask the Vet" table, offering her expertise on Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and end-of-life care for pets.
Moreover, the New York State Trooper’s Canine Unit will demonstrate their skills, showcasing the impressive capabilities of their working dogs. These interactive displays provide a captivating and educational experience, appealing to both young and old.
The Memorial Tree
A touching element of the event is the Pet Remembrance Tree, dedicated this year to the California wildlife victims. Attendees can contribute mementos in honor of pets they've lost. Rotarian Carl Dowden explains, "You can put any memento or message on the tree as a remembrance of your pet. Items can be returned if you wish, or they can stay to be part of next year's tree."
A Message of Kindness
Over the years, the Blessing of the Animals has become more than just an event; it's a catalyst for fostering a kinder world. As Joyce poignantly advises families, "Make kindness a hobby with your children... We need to get back to just connecting with each other and being kind with each other."
To learn more about the Blessing of the Animals or to find out how you can contribute, you can directly contact Third Lutheran Church or visit their website. Join the celebration and take part in an act of bringing communities closer through the love of animals.
