Empowering Children through Nature at Green Chimneys

Aired March 17th, 2024

Green Chimneys, nestled in Brewster, New York, offers a sanctuary and educational environment for children facing mental health challenges and developmental disabilities. The residential treatment center and special education school, as explained by Kristin Dionne, the CEO, is renowned for its innovative nature-based therapies integrated into a farm and wildlife center. Kristin Dionne shares, "We have about 250 students across our Brewster and Carmel campuses, with nature-based therapies at the heart of our services."

Green Chimneys utilizes a blend of traditional educational methods and unique therapeutic programs involving animal care and interaction. Dionne elaborates, "Our farm has everything from horses, donkeys, camels to typical farm animals like cows and pigs, alongside a wildlife center where we rehabilitate and, when possible, release animals." This hands-on approach not only aids in rehabilitation but also instills a sense of responsibility and connection with nature among the students.

Moreover, the center's commitment to community involvement and accessible programs is evident through their community-based services and public programs, which reach over a thousand youth and families annually. Dionne proudly states, "We provide comprehensive preventive intervention services, crisis support, and youth programming across multiple counties."

For families and children without the burden of tuition fees, Green Chimneys offers a transformative experience that combines education, therapy, and community service, supported by state funding and private donations. The organization’s mission extends beyond immediate educational needs, preparing students for future challenges and community integration, making it a pivotal institution in the landscape of special education and therapeutic community services.
