Empowering Literacy: The Story of Literacy Connections
Aired March 10th 2024

Today, we spotlight the essential work of Literacy Connections, a nonprofit dedicated to tackling the challenge of illiteracy in America. Led by Emily Williams, the organization focuses on enhancing literacy among adults and children through specialized programs. Emily describes the efforts to combat functional illiteracy, stating, "We provide one-on-one or small group tutoring for those who read below the sixth-grade level and for English language learners."
The magnitude of illiteracy in the U.S. is startling, with over 130 million adults reading at or below a sixth-grade level. Emily notes, "A lot of these adults are really good at pretending that they know how to read, even though they can’t." This widespread issue underscores the critical need for programs like those offered by Literacy Connections.
Key initiatives include the Book Buddies program, where volunteers spend time reading with elementary students to ensure they reach crucial literacy milestones. As Emily explains, "If you aren't reading at grade level by third grade, you're at a disadvantage because from then on, you're reading to learn."
Through her leadership and dedication, Emily Williams and her team at Literacy Connections are making significant strides toward breaking the cycle of illiteracy and opening doors of opportunity for countless individuals.
