Inspiring Change Through Art and Service: The Vassar Haiti Project

Aired March 23rd 2025

The Vassar Haiti Project (VHP) is an inspiring initiative that leverages the power of art to spearhead sustainable development in Haiti. Founded by Lila and Andrew Mead, VHP collaborates with local and international communities to support education, healthcare, and economic development in Haiti’s northwestern mountain villages.

The cornerstone of the project is its unique model of purchasing Haitian art and showcasing it in the United States to raise funds. These funds are then channeled into various development projects in Haiti. Andrew Mead explains, "We buy Haitian art in Haiti...that supports, uh, the livelihood of the artists, but it also gives us, gave us money from the get-go and still does to support projects in sustainable development."

Central to VHP’s mission is the annual Art and Soul gala, now in its 13th year, which raises essential funds for the operational expenses of a clinic serving over 3,000 Haitians. This year’s gala will be held at the Vassar College Alumni House on Thursday, May 1st, from 5:30 to 8:00 PM. The gala will honor Dr. Kim Heller and Dr. Diane Ello, prominent local doctors who have contributed significantly to VHP’s medical advisory board and worked firsthand in Haiti.

In addition to healthcare support, the Vassar Haiti Project focuses on fostering educational opportunities. Lila Mead shares the project's educational impact: “Young people are yearning to make a difference, and they don't know how...we try to give them an ability of seeing that they can be the catalyst for change in the world.”

The gala will feature a vibrant display of Haitian art, from paintings and iron sculptures to handcrafts made of varied materials. Art enthusiasts and philanthropists are encouraged to attend or visit the event’s website to support this transformative cause. The joy and vigor of Haitian culture will be highlighted with a musical performance by Paul Pesco and a special appearance by Dr. Elvis Francois, known as the singing neurosurgeon.

The Meads’ devotion to igniting change exemplifies the profound impact that art and community service can have on transforming lives.
