Sparrows Nest: Feeding Hope Through Community Care

Aired March 30th 2025

In the heart of the Hudson Valley, the story of Sparrow's Nest is one of community, compassion, and relentless dedication in the face of adversity. Krista Jones, the driving force behind this remarkable charity, has made it her mission to ensure that those battling cancer have one less worry on their plate: food.

Over the span of 12 years, Sparrow's Nest has evolved from a heartfelt gesture of support for a single friend into a lifeline for thousands. What began with Krista cooking meals for a friend who was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer has blossomed into an organization feeding about 500 people a week. As Krista puts it, “If I can protect your body with nutritious food as you go through treatment, then we’re doing something right.”

Sparrow's Nest is more than just a meal service; it is a beacon of support for families enduring the fight against cancer. The organization primarily operates in Dutchess County and has expanded its reach to include Ulster, Orange, Putnam, and Northern Westchester counties. Krista emphasizes the importance of quality, stating, “We make sure to never repeat a recipe for a year. It’s like Christmas every day when you get Sparrow's food.”

The charity's mission is expanding with major milestones like their upcoming event, the Superhero Rock and Run, scheduled for May 31st at Barton Orchards. This event combines fundraising with a festival atmosphere, encouraging participants to register for a 5K, or join a fitness challenge leading up to the event. Sparrow's Nest relies on the generosity of its community, with funds primarily raised through events like this, alongside individual donations. Remarkably, the organization sustains itself on the support of 28,000 unique donors, each contributing to ensure they can meet their $1.3 million yearly budget.

The work of Sparrow's Nest is supported by a vibrant network of volunteers, including drivers who deliver meals, gardeners who beautify the grounds, and groups who support fundraising events. Krista highlights the critical role of these volunteers, noting, “Our drivers are the eyes and ears of the charity. They provide us with invaluable support and insights into the lives of the families we serve.”

Krista Jones and her team at Sparrow's Nest demonstrate that with a bit of creativity, a lot of heart, and unwavering community support, it is possible to make significant differences in the lives of those dealing with cancer. For those interested in learning more or getting involved, Sparrow's Nest welcomes volunteers and donors through their website sparrowsnestcharity.org or directly through their phone number at (845) 204-9421. As Krista so passionately expresses, “Cancer may change your life, but we’re here to help you fight the fight with good food and good company.”
